Wuxi Vocational Institute of Commerce

Wuxi Vocational Institute of Commerce (WXIC) is a state run full time higher vocational college geared to fostering high quality technicians for modern service industry. Founded in the name of Wuxi Technical School of Commerce in 1965, it was upgraded to the present name as a vocational college with the approval of the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province in October 2000. In 2008 it was honoured as one of the demonstrative vocational colleges in Jiangsu province, ranking the leading ones in the province. In 2012 the Institute was approved to be one of the experimental units to construct modern vocational education systems, being qualified to deliver bachelor degree courses in cooperation with Nanjing University of Finance and Economics and Nanjing Audit University for “3+2” transition continuum mode of higher diploma and bachelor degree.

The campus of WXIC covers an area of about 265 acres with a total building floor space of 300,000 square meters. The college library holds a print collection of over 900,000 volumes and other digital materials. The whole investment of the Institute in assets in the recent years has reached more than RMB 1 billion.

WXIC consists of 15 schools and departments for academic operation. They are School of Business Management, School of International Business, School of Accountancy and Finance, School of Tourism Management, School of Arts & Design, School of Digital and Media, School of Automobile Technology, School of Internet of Things Technology, School of Electromechanical Technology, School of International Education, School of Enterprise Education, School of Continuing Education, Department of Basic Courses, Department of Ideological & Political Courses and Department of Physical Education. Over 40 specialties and programs are deployed for about 13,000 students from almost all the provinces and municipalities of China. Among the 489 faculty members there are 30 professors, 184 associate professors, 325 with master’s or doctor’s degrees and more than 20 awarded as key and excellent teachers in Jiangsu province . One of its teaching teams has been honored with the title “National-level Excellent Teaching Team”, two “Provincial-level Excellent Teaching Team”.

WXIC boasts of 2 national key specialties for construction, 1 national excellent resource sharing course, 2national excellent courses, 27 nationally authorized textbooks, 4 provincial key demonstrative specialties, 8 provincially featured specialties, 19 provincial excellent courses and 2 centers for creativeness in talent fostering modes. In recent years, the Institute has won 2 national prizes and 8 prizes from provincial educational authorities for teaching achievements in higher education, with 15 courses rated as excellent and 25 textbooks recognized as national and provincial excellent books. In the last 5 years, 1613 patents has been authorized by the national patent administration office, with 2 national projects and 31 provincial projects conducted.

The Institute is well equipped with laboratories and experimental centers. It possesses on the campus 167 laboratories and experimental rooms, 15 technical training centers, of which 5 centers have been financially sponsored by the central and provincial governments. In addition, WXIC has built up more than 120 off-campus training centers and bases for students training and practice.

WXIC attaches great importance to the students’ entrepreneurship education and practice, backed up by School of Enterprise Education and fully functioned Students Enterprise Park. To provide students with essential skills and experiences in starting businesses, the Institute has built a business park with all the required facilities required for business operation, which was recognized as the first group of parks in Jiangsu Province. The three-dimensional pattern of teaching-simulating- practicing entrepreneurship education is incubating the students’ business seeds to bear fruit. To accrediting the Institute for its achievement in enterprise initiative and practice, the Institute has been credited with one of the first group of Jiangsu Model Universities and Colleges in Undergraduate Enterprise Education, and its enterprise park has been listed as Jiangsu Demonstrative Base for Undergraduate Enterprise.

WXIC lay has established close relationship with industry and all beneficial resources to scaffold education cause. The Institute founded Jiangsu Vocational Education Group of Commerce and Trade in 2003, now with 127 members, of which 74 are major and medium businesses and companies. She is the president unit of China Higher Vocational Education and Commerce Research Association, the initiator of East-Middle-West China Association of Vocational Colleges of Business and Trade. In 2007, it passed the evaluation of Higher Vocational Education Quality conducted by the Ministry of Education, and was honored with the title of Excellent College.

WXIC pay close attention to students’ qualities enhancement through a complete system of quality fostering. In past five years, the students of the Institute has won more than 180 first prizes in China Skills Contest, Jiangsu Skills Contest, Jiangsu Undergraduate Art Show, Jiangsu Undergraduate Competition of Enterprise Planning, Jiangsu Undergraduate Competition on Career Planning, etc.. Students pass rate of the vocational qualification accreditation is up to 93% and the employment rate is as high as 99%.

WXIC highly value the communication with outside world and has established firm connection with many universities and colleges from abroad. It has built up many cooperative education programs with some distinguished universities in Korea, Malaysia, Canada, USA, UK, Germany, Australia, etc.  .
